Senior GI and Laparoscopic Surgeon
I started my life´s journey in August 1965 from a missionary hospital in East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh. I spent the first 12 years of my life in our village and studied in our local school up to 7th standard. I was fortunate to get into Andhra Pradesh Residential School, Tadikonda, Guntur District for my secondary education. This I believe is a turning point in my life. I then went onto Andhra Pradesh Residential Junior College, Nagarjuna Sagar, Guntur District, for Intermediate education. Both these institutions were managed by Andhra Pradesh Residential Educational Society which is a governmental organization and whose aim was to get the best students and handpicked teachers from all over the former combined state of Andhra Pradesh and put them together to give the best possible education and up bringing. That was a tremendous experience.
I can’t go further without paying tributes to my teachers from both those institutions. They have looked after us, taught us and shaped our futures in the true “Gurukul” style. They have put the interests of students before themselves and their families. There are no words to express gratitude to them for what they have done to us. I most sincerely thank them all.
Due to the sound foundation from APRJC, it was a cake walk getting a good rank in EAMCET. Without ever going to any of the coaching institutions, I got state 3rd rank in EAMCET and was fortunate to get into Guntur Medical College in September 1982. Thanks again to some wonderful teachers, seniors and classmates to give tough competition, I received excellent training in medicine. I received two gold medals in Anatomy, one in Pathology and Orthopedics and a Merit Certificate in Medicine during under graduation. The same month I finished house job, I got a seat in MS General Surgery in one of the premier medical institutions in the country – PGIMER, Chandigarh. It was again a wonderful experience being trained in one of the best institutes. After finishing my post-graduation, I headed west to the United Kingdom.
Soon after going to the UK, I got fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCS). I have worked in the UK for 10 years in increasing grades of seniority and was a Consultant before returning to India in 2004. Most of the work I had done in the UK was Abdominal Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, General Surgery and Breast Surgery. I had a marvelous experience in the UK. It has broadened my horizons and I had the opportunity to travel and see the world. Beyond training and experience, it had given me a different perspective in medicine and life as whole – being able to see and treat the patients as fellow human beings. Ever since coming to India, I am attached to KIMS Hospitals in Secunderabad, since it’s inception. I was instrumental in setting up the department of General & GI Surgery, Surgical Gastroenterology, Liver Transplant unit. I was the Head of Department for a major period of time in the last 20 years.
